I am very pleased to announce that my new book, The Secret Texts of Hellenic Polytheism: A Practical Guide to the Restored Pagan Religion of George Gemistos Plethon, was published by Llewellyn in May 2022! Plethon (c.1355–1452) was considered by his disciples to be one of the greatest Platonic Pagan philosophers; they wrote: Plato—Plotinus—Plethon. His lectures on Plato helped to trigger the Renaissance by reawakening an interest in Platonism in the arts, literature, and philosophy. He may also be considered the first Neopagan, that is, the first to reconstruct an ancient Pagan religion for contemporary practice. During his lifetime, his Paganism was a secret known only to his followers, but after he died, his Book of Laws was discovered, which revealed a complete Platonic Pagan theology, rituals, hymns, and a sacred calendar. Unfortunately Christian enemies destroyed much of the book, but enough has survived for practical use today. In addition to presenting a Neopagan religion descending from ancient Hellenism, Plethon’s book presents a systematic polytheistic theology, which satisfies our need for intellectual understanding of the gods, and a philosophy of life suitable to the modern world.
My book, which includes the first complete English translation of the surviving parts of his Book of Laws and other Plethonic texts, explains Plethon’s philosophy and religious rituals for modern Neopagans. Although the surviving parts are sufficient for religious practice, my book also reconstructs destroyed parts based on Plethon’s Platonic and Neoplatonic sources. It provides everything you need to know to practice a Neopagan religion deeply rooted in Hellenic religion and philosophy.
